Objective of this course: The students will gain an overview of dendrochronology and how this science can be applied. They will learn to extract environmental information about the past.
Details:
• Introduction to dendrochronology
• Tree growth; tree physiology; environment affecting tree growth
• Wood formation; cell formation; wood anatomy
• Collecting and preparing samples, marking tree rings
• Extracting information from tree rings: building a chronology; cross dating, indexing, tree age, tree growth, correlation between series, and correlation with environmental information
• Dendroclimatology
• Appling radiocarbon and stable isotopes in tree rings
Competence Goals:
1. The students gain basic knowledge about dendrochronology, its concepts, theory, and methods
2. The students know the relationship between environmental conditions and tree growth
3. The students are able to understand dendrochronological papers.
