WS 2022/23

This is the lecture series on energy subjects, which are related to the Topics of the KIT Graduate School "Enabling Net Zero" - ENZo (www.enzo.kit.edu) with a focus on sector coupling and circular economy. The aim is to provide a broader and more holistic view of the energy system with its complex interactions. Hence, the lectures offer basic insights into very different topics, such as specific technologies, economic aspects as well as the role of humans in the energy system. Though the lecture is primarily tailored to ENZo's doctoral researchers, interested master students and doctoral researchers of all faculties are cordially invited to attend.

Plagiarism and falsification of data by researchers have been in the news repeatedly over recent years. The internet allows knowledge to become a mobile and easily re-packaged good. Even though deliberate academic misconduct is not representative, good scientific practice presents a series of difficult questions, and nagging problems for researchers and accidental breaches can happen. But there are basic and helpful principles which researchers should be aware of and should be able to apply. Where this is the case, it is possible to act appropriately even in difficult situations and avoid dangerous pitfalls in the academic career. This workshop familiarises participants with good scientific practice. It informs them about ethical and legal guidelines and uses typical issues and problems as examples to show how they can be practically implement in research.

To achieve the temperature targets of the Paris Global Climate Agreement, negative emissions are a necessary complement to CO2 mitigation measures. The event will provide an overview of the need for CO2 removals, different removal options, and some political/economic dimensions of the debate.

Everyone, no matter the age, social class, gender or education holds unconscious beliefs that primarily serve as a filter and categorization to the magnitude of information we receive every moment. Consequently, we use mental shortcuts to complete missing information about others automatically. Within the university context, unconscious bias can influence our decision-making concerning e.g. application procedures, performance evaluation and personnel development as well as any communication. The workshop aims to sensitize the participants about cognitive distortions concerning how we perceive other persons and which effects these unconscious biases can have on our actions. Furthermore, the workshop will encourage the participants to recognize and question their own and others´ biases as well as it will help them to identify possible ways to overcome them and improve their daily interactions.

Jeder Mensch, unabhängig von Alter, sozialer Schicht, Geschlecht oder Bildung, verfügt über unbewusste Vorannahmen, die in erster Linie als Filter und zur Kategorisierung der Fülle von Informationen dienen, die wir ständig erhalten. Folglich nutzen wir mentale Abkürzungen, um fehlende Informationen über andere automatisch zu ergänzen. Im universitären Kontext kann diese unbewusste Voreingenommenheit unsere Entscheidungsfindung zum Beispiel in Bezug auf Bewerbungsverfahren, Leistungsbewertung und Personalentwicklung sowie jeglicher Kommunikation beeinflussen. Ziel des Workshops ist es, die Teilnehmenden dafür zu sensibilisieren, welche kognitiven Verzerrungen wir in der Wahrnehmung anderer Personen haben und welche Auswirkungen diese unbewussten Vorurteile auf unser Handeln haben können. Darüber hinaus soll der Workshop die Teilnehmenden ermutigen, eigene und fremde Voreingenommenheiten zu erkennen und zu hinterfragen, sowie Möglichkeiten zur Überwindung dieser aufzuzeigen und den täglichen Umgang miteinander zu verbessern.
