2312698 – Superconducting Magnet Technology

The course is planned to be held in attendance. Handouts and slides will be provided via ILIAS. First, we will cover the basics of superconductivity relevant for magnet technology. Practical wires will be discussed and relevant properties and issues will be addressed. We will look at relevant magnet and coil applications in healthcare, medicine, high-energy physics, energy technology and industry. A detailed design process will be used to touch the diffent construction and component details of a cryogen-free, high-temperature superconductor (HTS) based magnet operated in persistent mode. This process is used as a practical guide and anchor for the learning goals. Therefore we will start with simple basic design approaches (sometimes as simple as back-of-an-envelope) via EXCEL approximations to more sophisticated PYTHON scripts (some FEM). There is no need for prerequisites or in-advance knowledge. The lecture will be followed by an exercise to deepen the learnings in specific examples. The lectures on the HTS-magnet are a mixture of lecture and exercise due to the interplaying design process. The (oral) exam of this course „Supercponducting Magnet Technology" is a dedicated oral exam. ***Language of the course is English exclusively***
