2511106 – Nature-Inspired Optimization Methods

Many optimization problems are too complex to be solved to optimality. A promising alternative is to use stochastic heuristics, based on some fundamental principles observed in nature. Examples include evolutionary algorithms, ant algorithms, or simulated annealing. These methods are widely applicable and have proven very powerful in practice. During the course, such optimization methods based on natural principles are presented, analyzed and compared. Since the algorithms are usually quite computational intensive, possibilities for parallelization are also investigated. Learning objectives: Students learn: - Different nature-inspired methods: local search, simulated annealing, tabu search, evolutionary algorithms, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization - Different aspects and limitation of the methods - Applications of such methods - Multi-objective optimization methods - Constraint handling methods - Different aspects in parallelization and computing platforms
