22770 – Bioprocess Development
Successful bioprocess development requires a range of technical and communication skills. The course will link microbial strain engineering with bioprocess engineering and extends the basic biotechnological knowledge gained in the first years of studies. Knowledge of previous courses will be reinforced and applied for the technical development of upstream bioprocesses. The objective of this course is to provide the students with the necessary and fundamental insight of bioprocess development and how different fields interact with each other. This includes fundamentals in (i) selection of products and application (ii) microbial host selection (iii) strain engineering (iv) bioprocess optimization (v) scale-up and associated fields such as cost and sustainability assessment. The students will learn to think interdisciplinary and to apply the key principles of the different bioprocess development steps. State of the art knowledge will be supported by insights into emerging fields and topics within bioprocess development such as miniaturization, automatization, digitalization that will accelerate bioprocess development in future.
