5014001 – Reading, interpreting and representing numbers - Course B [HaWiKo]
This course will provide the students with the tools to appropriately read and interpret numbers in scientific research while acquiring the skills to effectively communicate these to different audiences. The course is divided into two sections. The first part of the course focuses on how research is done and data is collected. This section provides the students with a broad understanding of the different types of research, how samples are drawn, and the basic statistical knowledge to evaluate a study. The second half of the course looks at broader issues regarding the uses and abuses of numbers in research and the media such as the replication crisis and predatory publishing. By the end of the course, the students should be able to critically evaluate numeric and statistical statements used to make scientific claims and use these skills to make a short presentation.
